Things you should keep out of your pool
When you daydreamed about installing a pool, did you have any idea of how much work it would be? Probably, while you pictured lazy days spent lounging, you find yourself doing a lot more skimming, scrubbing, testing, and treating than floating and sunning. Do you even know all the things necessary to keep your pool functioning? One of the first lessons is all the things you should keep out of your pool.
- Too much Cyanuric Acid: You might know that you need Cyanuric acid, aka water conditioner or water stabilizer, in your pool, to protect your chlorine from the sun. Without it, the chlorine is likely to be burned off by the sun’s UV rays, so it’s important to keep 30pmm to 50ppm of CYA in your water. However, if your pool’s CYA levels get too high, the chlorine will stop working. Worse, the only way to reduce excessive CYA levels is to drain the pool and start over.
- Broken Glass: You may think that keeping broken glass out of the pool is an obvious choice, but you’d be surprised at how easily it can wind up there. It’s easy to drop and break something, and nearly impossible to get all the pieces of broken glass out of the pool. The best way to prevent disaster is to stick to plastic around the pool.
- Soaps and Lotions: Make showering a rule before entering the pool, and you’ll be keeping oils and chemicals from disrupting your pool’s chemistry and gumming up your filter. An outdoor shower can prevent a world of trouble because keeping these things out of the water is easier than removing them once they’re in there.
- Too much Nature: Ducks look cute swimming in your pool, but the contaminants they leave behind are far less adorable. Keeping leaves and other types of organic debris out of your pool keeps your filter clean, keeps your chlorine from being depleted, and prevents your pool pump from having to work too hard.
- Rule Breakers: Whether unruly kids or drunk uncles, you don’t need anyone in your pool who won’t follow the rules. Not only will these troublemakers cause more work for you, but they could create a dangerous situation for which you’ll be liable. Keep your pool’s guest list to close friends and family members you can trust to behave.
